CASTELLO DI SERRAVALLE

This old medieval town in the hills above Bologna is now the centre of a municipality of 4,200 inhabitants. The Samoggia river and its tributary, the Ghiaia, run through it. The largest community in the municipality is Castelletto where all commercial activity is based. The Castle, immersed in the tranquillity of the hills and surrounding vineyards, remains unchanged and continues to dominate the valley below. Vineyards and cherry orchards extend from the castle as far as the hamlet of Fagnano and, according to the season, imbue the hills with different colours. Wine-growing is undoubtedly the most widespread form of agricultural activity for Castello di Serravalle which became a “Città del Vino” a few years ago. Apart from wines and cherries, there are salamis, fragrant breads of the area. Theses are often substituted with tigelle and borlenghi (a type of crepe garnished with parmisan cheese and sausage) and gnocco fritto (a fried dough), a dish at which the inhabitants excel.
