CASTELVETRO

The town is near to Modena in the foothills of the Apennines along the banks of the Guerro river. Its origins date back to an etruscan village and its Castle is the oldest in the foothills of the Apennines. Castelvetro has preserved its evocative historical heritage to the present day and celebrates it in a number of popular events which include an historical reenactment of life in the 16th C. The municipality covers about 14 square kilometres and has a little over 10,000 inhabitants. In 2003 the Local Administration managed to obtain the orange flag certification and recognition from the Italian Touring Club for the environment. Castelvetro is one of the Italian “Città del Vino” and its hills are covered in DOC vines which provide the grapes for its crowning glory, Lambrusco Grasparossa. The wine cellar within the medieval Castle of Levizzano is well worth a visit. Another important grape is Trebbiano which produces the must used in the production of the Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena. The Parmigiano Reggiano is also typically produced in this area.
