MONTEVEGLIO

A hill community to the west of Bologna and bordering with the province of
Modena near to where the rivers Ghiaia and Samoggia meet. It is an important
historical centre in the valley with 4,400 inhabitants between the old town, with its Abbey dating to the times of Matilde di Canossa, and the modern quarter which houses the town hall, commercial district, the main services and an important industrial estate. The Parco Regionale dell’Abbazia di Monteveglio covers an area of 1,000 hectares in the surrounding hills, and brings together features of historic and natural interest which characterise the area. The headquarters of the Park, as well as the seat of the Consorzio Vini Colli Bolognesi (the organisation which controls the quality of wine production), is situated in the ancient hamlet of San Teodoro af the foot of the hill on which the Abbey is built. Excellent red and white DOC wines are produced in Monteveglio which has been nominated a “Città del Vino”. Other typical local products are Parmigiano Reggiano and cherries.
