SAVIGNANO SUL PANARO

The municipality of Savignano sul Panaro has over 8,000 inhabitants and is
situated on the right bank of the Panaro river between the hills and the upper
plains. The medieval town of Savignano Alto is of great architectural and historical interest as are the archaeological remains found in the area which include the skeleton of a Pliocene Age Elephant and the “Venere” statue, dating to the later Paleolithic period. A lot of the area is given over to agriculture, especially fruit (cherries, plums, pears, apricots and apples) and DOC wines (Trebbiano, Pinot, Montuni, Albana, Lambrusco Grasparossa and Barbera). Savignano’s culinary traditions are influenced by its position on the border of the provinces of Bologna and Modena and between the hills and the plain. Typical mountain foods are crescentine (stove top bread) and borlenghi, while those from the province of Modena are balsamic vinegar and nocino (a liqueur made from walnuts), and those from Bologna include fresh and filled pasta.
