Vignola lies in the foothills of the Apennines on the left bank of the river Panaro.

The “City” (nominated as such by the President of the Republic in 1994) has over 20,000 inhabitants and is rich in history and sites of great architectural interest, foremost of which is the famous Rocca. A number of famous historical figures were born here, such as Jacopo Barozzi (1507-1573), the famous 16th C architect, and Antonio Muratori (1672-1750), historian and man of letters. History and culture blend together perfectly in these surroundings and can be

appreciated, in particular, along the river Panaro Pathway which includes the Nature Route starting

 

 

 

in Modena, and the Sun Route which leads to the river Park of Marano sul Panaro. For decades, the economy of the area was based on agriculture and is now characterised by a number of small and medium businesses operating in a number of sectors. Fruit growing remains an important feature, and it is not by chance that the Consorzio della Ciliegia e della Susina tipica is headquartered here. Vignola is known above all for its cherries, such as the Mora di Vignola and durone.

 

 

Of no less importance are the plums, apricots, apples and pears.

The gastronomic tradition is very rich here, and besides the dishes typical of the Emilia region, you can also enjoy the renowned “Torta Barozzi” and the cherries in alcohol.
